Yeah, I guess.
I suppose that's better than sizing them so the viewer can see the whole photograph at the same time.

Addendum: Just got four mud flaps. Will report on how they work.

After installing my four mudflaps I washed the car, let it dry completely, and drove at 25 MPH down a dirt road for a couple of miles.
No improvement; there was dust all over my rear end (the car's also).
When it rains, I'll check if the road/tire splatter is as bad as it was before I installed the flaps.
Cross your legs and wish me luck.

SOME of the problem is part of the basic aerodynamics of a box. As the front punches a hole in the air and the body fills it briefly. After the rear passes though, air MUST rush into the hole and fill it. What one is trying to do with lessening the "dirtiness" is to block sources of air containing large amounts of dirt and have the air come from "cleaner" areas.
The idea behind the mudflaps and valance as dirt blockers is to redirect the dirty air so that it comes up after a layer of cleaner boundary air. Thereby, the dirty air falls away from the hatch and not on it.
The idea behind a "wing" as deflector is to either blow the air up and away from the hatch OR to blow cleaner boundary air from the roof ONTO the rear hatch to BE the clean boundary air that fills the hole instead of the dirty air from below.
The effectiveness of the various techniques is up for debate.
Overall, some may be more effective than others, BUT none is perfect and works in all situations. Where I live, there are dirt and gravel roads aplenty, so the roads can be dusty and the hatch quite dirty regardless of what is added.
Instead, I go for clean and light and "put up" with the dirt.
Unless a very effective, light, low drag device is shown to work, I'll put the money into other things.

Good explanation, TartanJack.
I suspect that one of the reasons the flaps did so little about the dust-collecting problem is because dust is barely heavier than air, and trying to direct it at slow speeds is folly at best. So, dusty roads will probably mean a car washing as soon as I get home. Trouble is, there's a small wildlife sanctuary on a dirt road near where I live and I like to go there several times a week to watch the herons and egrets fish, the bald eagles harass everybody, the 2,000 Canada geese swim in the shallow lake, and listen to the ducks quack quack.
The other problem with air-flow and the hatchback design has to do with crud being spit up on wet roads. My hope is that when the highways are wet the mudflaps will live up to their name, otherwise methinks that 20 minutes on a wet highway will make it so that I can't even see out the back window. Oh, a monsoon will keep it washed clean, but in light rain ...? During my one experience with that, the water evaporated so quickly that I didn't use the rear wiper/washer for fear of scratching the glass.
If the mudflaps don't help on rainy rays, I'm scrawed.

Ignore my first post. After a few days of rain and dust (in OK you get that) the back was
significantly
dirtier than the rest of the car, even with the spoiler. I think it is just our lot in life.

I don't notice the back window being overly dirty, but the bumper is. I have the Scion applique and it is always a dirty gray vs. clean black.

More on mudflap effectiveness:
It finally rained in western Oregon, so I took a 30-mile highway/city drive to determine if my new mudflaps would help keep road crud from being spit up by my tires and landing on the rear window. Voila! They worked!
Rainwater made it necessary to use the rear wiper (which I hate because its out-of-synch-with-the-front-wipers is in continuous view through the rear-view mirror), but at least I had no fear of the blade scratching glass.
At the end of the drive there was no accumulation of dirt/crud on the backside of my xB.
So, mudflaps seems to be effective with road grime, but not dust. I can live with that.
Tailor-made mud flaps are expensive, but generic flaps can be bought at the corner auto supply store for about $20 a pair. Installation requires a drill, wench (if you can find one to help), wrench, and from 1-2 hours of mild labor.
Note: I don't have the spoiler.

That's great to hear!
That should probably go on my longer term "to do" list, then.

That would be HERE:
http://newscionparts.com/product/?id=2737
Rather expensive for what they are, BUT they look integrated. $212.80
(I'd paint them satin black myself.)
I wonder if Toyota will import them as a Toyota USA part (would be significantly cheaper) . . .
