I have an aerodynamic brick (aka 08 Scion xB) with a 5-speed, so top speed is of no interest to me. I like the power available in 2nd and 3rd gears for winding roads, and 4th gear for straight highways. 5th gear is for level cruising only.
In fact, some people assume that overdrive (5th gear with a stick, and 4th gear with the automatic tranny) is potentially faster than the gear just below it. Not true. Overdrive is for relaxed (engine) cruising. Maximum speed is to be found in the gear just below overdrive.
At least it's that way with normal cars. If you have a close-ratio transmission, the situation changes. Some close-ratio transmissions don't even have an overdrive.
$100,000 German wunder cars might be different, also. I saw one, once.

Well Im coming from a modded 89 mustang coupe and yes I have been to 140mph in it  I have no dobt that the Xb will run triples but I am saving the triples for my next lifetime.LOL I had a Big Rig (93 KW T-600 with a 425 cat) that would run triples lets just say when the cops get you pulled over after runnen triples in a commercial rig sometimes it just is not a real pleasant road side visit..........

Dumb question for all you that have a stick. Does it show what gear your in left of the clock like the automatics do? Just curious about one of the high speed pics.

I had the box up to 85-90 on cruise control, on a stretch of lonely highway between Houston and Dallas.

Honestly, I don't care for the way it feels at that speed so I probably wouldn't go that fast again.

The Box likes to run 80 on the freeway. It does so effortlessly (and often) but I haven't pushed it. We only have about 800 miles on it so far.

Unfortunately I have to disagree, top gear is going to obviously net you more gas mileage like your saying to cruise but it is also for that same reason that if you had the power to do it you will have a higher top speed in that top gear. I've ran top speed in almost every car I've had, Toyota's, Mazda's, Honda's, even Kia's (highly modified of course) and top speed was always in the highest gear.

I have an aerodynamic brick (aka 08 Scion xB) with a 5-speed, so top speed is of no interest to me. I like the power available in 2nd and 3rd gears for winding roads, and 4th gear for straight highways. 5th gear is for level cruising only.
