Hi Guys,

I just purchased a new XB Scion 2009 Cheesy.  I just filled it for the first time today.  Had a little prob. at the pump shocked.  It shut off at a little less than 3/4 full - squeezed a bit more in, hardly any, pump kept shutting off.  I thought it was full, until I started the car back up again and saw the gauge.  Hmm - Went back out, re-swiped my card and goofed with the gas filler again.  I was at Shell...

Well, after messing around with it, I finally found and angle where it started going in again.  Put in another 3 gallons, finally filling the rest of the tank without issue.  So, not sure if this was from the design of the XBs filler tube (which is really a small i.d.  and snakes all over the place before getting to the gas tank), or it was just an issue with the pump.  I am Just curious if anyone else has had to finesse the pump handle to fully fill one of the new XBs.

Thanks for any input.

I believe it is due to the angle of the nozzle in the filler neck. I've had my 09 xB for 3 weeks now and have not had a problem fueling. The pump nozzle has a valve that, when it gets back flow, shuts off the pump as a safety feature. I recommend trying different pumps. If it does happen again, there is a possibility of a damaged/defective filler tube...

the only problem I've ever had was with a pump with a faulty vapor recovery system. I used a different nozzle and no more problems. So, that could have been your problem if the pump had the system.

I've run into that when I fill it myself.

However, it could be that I'm out of practice.  I live in Oregon where self-serve doesn't exist.

I have been away from the forum after I moved to CA few weeks ago. Now I am back.

Yesterday, I have the same problem happened which was discussing in here. It also happened in Shell too. I went to 2 different Shells and tried it out, the pump keep shutting it off even the gas tank was not full. My 2009 just reached 1 year and this is the 1st time I am having the problem. Has anyone out there figured out what is the real issue is? Or many be I really need to find a right angle to fill the gas.

My 10,000 miles service due soon, if it happen again, I might have to ask the dealer to check it out too.

Thanks guys!!!

Ok, I tried to fill up the car yesterday and it did that again at first. Then I try different angles to hold the pump and finally did the job just fine. I never had this problem before. Strange.

I read some where that a lot of Toyota cars do that.

as AJAY said......Do not "TOP" off it is bad on the fuel system ; vent system .

We see SO many cars at the dealership that have check engine lights because of vapor canisters which are FULL of gasoline from over zealous clerks/owners attempting to TOP OFF the tank.

When it clicks off, dont try to top off to the very top.

Just our observations here.
