Honestly its 10mins city, 10mins hwy, 10mins city. Then all over again on the way home. I have noticed that if I use cruise control and but the car in neutral when coasting down hill I get much better mileage. Its really testing my driving skill.

Just had my first fill-up. 14 gal. for 280 mi. in OKC, city driving, frequent stop lights, mostly around 45 mph. Always tried to up-shift around 2500 rpm, only has about 500 miles, hasn't been driven over 70 mph. Some A/C lately, but mostly without A/C. Computer says 22.5mpg, which is wrong, either that or 7-eleven rig their pump. Funny thing is, after filling up, the 'range' thing says 263. Tires seem a little low, haven't checked 'em psi yet. Might try increasing tires press., see if they help me get to 28mpg like some of you guys.

sounds like something was wrong with the pump - either that or you were on fumes as the the fuel tank is 14.0 gallons on the xB
as for the mileage computer, mine reads 1.7 mpg higher than actual mileage so i just subtract that from the display to get actual mileage... [my 2004 Solara did the same thing]
for example - my current accumulated mpg is 23.1 on the AVG MPG display - subtract 1.7 and i am currently averaging 21.4 mpg
calculate a few tanks manually to see if yours might be reading a little off also...

Yah, so I don't own one yet, but both my bro and I are both considering.
Here's what I don't get. I just drove up from Raleigh, NC to Boston, MA area. In my 91 toy previa. on the trip up, which included stop and go hiway, and at least 50-80 miles of rural routes/ with some stop lights, I got just an RCH under 26MPG. This from a vehicle is bigger in every dimension, can carry 7 people in complete comfort, and that prolly weighs twice that the xB does, and has 210K miles on the odee, to boot. It has AC (x2), PS, PW, PL.
I kid and say I drive like a grampa, but i really don't... I do what every one else is doing, except i don't follow to closely. and I keep my foot off the brake. I averaged 63 MPH for the trip, including pit stops, and RI, CT, NY, NJ, MD, etc traffic and toll tie-ups and massive construction delays (WTF with the roads in the North East guys??? That's just embarrassing!).
The van gets it's oil changed every 10K whether it needs it or not (it looks like honey when I finally change it)
and the plugs are original at least from 60k miles (which is when I bought it)
been up her for a week, mixed driving, stuck in construction (WTF???) and averaged just under 24.5MPG.
Anyone care to tell me how this is possible?
I'd love to get a new car, but I can't justify it if this is the best they can do. I can justify spending some money fixing my old egg.... especially if it gets what a new shoe-box on wheels gets.
Come to think of it.... my 2000 trans am, with a 350HP 5.7 liter, 3800 lbs at the curb, an auto tranny and convertible fun, gets mid 20s on the highway too... How come new cars get such incredibly crappy mileage??? I look at the xB and figger it should get mid thirties in a race. what is goin on?

i doubt that a Previa weighs 6000+ lbs
it probably weighs about 500-600 lbs more than the xB...
i owned a 2004 Solara, which uses the Camry engine just as the xB does, although it is tuned a little differently - i got similar city mpg in the Solara and the highway mileage was around 30 mpg or a little better, but the Solara is much more aerodynamically designed...
i am getting around 22mpg in city driving if i do not lead-foot it too much!

I had a 90 Buick LeSabre that would get 33 mpg doing 70ish. I traded my 2002 Olds van that would get 30 mpg and hold 7 passengers for the xB, so, I am with you when it comes to the mpg that the xB is getting. I believe that the xB should have an extra gear (automatics) to lower the rpms and that would be a big help. I didn't purchase the xb for it's mileage alone, I just liked the car and wanted to downsize some.
Auto makers will have to address the mpg issue very soon since gasoline is heading towards $10.00 a gallon quickly.
I guess you could call the xB, Back to the Future when it comes to mpgs!

The previa door badge says 5215 LBS (I don't have the manual, never needed it), I'm a little over 200 lbs, and I had about 3-400 Lbs of photogear and luggage with me.... average in about 70 Lbs of fuel, and about 70 lbs of dirt, and we're pretty damn close to 3 ton.
xB is supposed to be 2600-2700.... or around half the weight.
The Previa has a 2.4 liter motor (same block tipped on its side??), and an auto slush-box 4 speed tranny, with rear wheel drive. Previas don't look huge, but they are quite substantial vehicles. and deceptively roomy on the inside.
I really don't baby it either... I was obviously going 75ish+ most of the time I was on the road to make 63 average MPH. Looking at a 12 hour trip, I was more interested in getting there than saving a few MPGs.
I do run my tires at about 10 PSI higher than suggested to help reduce rolling resistance. Anyone try this on your scion?
I'll definitely post again after my trip south (I'll have a full load, including a motorcycle stuffed inside)

I saw somewhere online, the previa having a 3800 Lbs curb weight. I'll put mine on a scale b4 the trip south.

the curb weight for the 2008 xB is 3020 lbs for the manual and 3086 lbs for the automatic
[Eric - could you add this info to dimensions & weights in Info section please]

Edmunds says the 91 Previa weighs 3,780 lbs, the 2008 xB weighs 3086 lbs. It also says the xB produces 20 more HP, and that the Previa's MPG was 18 city, 21 hwy (under the old measurement standards).

not sure if anyone else has noticed - but you can back off the peddle in my xb and watch the mpg gauge go up and still retain the same mph- i get 30plus hwy no problem with about 2000 miles on it -last tank got 27-8 with 70% city

The position of the peddle is a much better indicator of fuel use. That instant MPG thing is just a guess.

The 5215 lbs may be the gross vehicle weight , not the curb weight.

I've been checking my mileage by hand. I have just over 4ooo miles on her and I'm averaging right at 29.2 mpg right now. I just put my intake on this morning so I expect it to go up a little more.
