I have checked the mileage on 3 tanks. The first was 31.4, second was 29.5 and third was 28.8. All figured with calculator.

do you mean the vehicle's mileage calculator?  if so, make sure to calculate a few tanks manually to verify the accuracy of your calculator.

my average accumulated mpg calculator consistently reads 1.7 mpg above actual mileage, so if i am seeing say 25.7 mpg on it, i subtract 1.7 and i know i am currently getting 24 mpg.

These were all manually calculated.

you are getting some Great mileage there Ole Dummy!   yes

I am at 26mpg even. The car is telling me 27.1 but I believe it is an optimist.

I have about 17,000 miles on my xB.  Mixed freeway and city driving gives about 22 - 23 mpg.  I just completed a 600 mile trip with a significant amount of mountain driving at 70mph on cruise control.  On the grades up the mountains the car dropped into 3rd gear (automatic trans) quite a bit.  Overall mpg was 28.45.  The dealership where I have the oil changed recently switched over to Castrol synthetic blend oil.  I have to check to see if it improves the mialeage any.

Related question:

Repeatedly, I've heard references to economy and power increasing at around 5,000 miles and more so at around 10,000 miles (which is also the periods of the first 2 oil changes).
Just how significant was the change and did anyone have a dyno proven increase in power?

Or is this all "tales" . . . (seat of the pants "feel") . . . ?

automatic trans. with 15,800 miles, driving around "flat" Ohio I am getting 26.4 city, and around 29 - 30 mpg on the highway at 75 mph.  The fuel mileage has increased with more miles on the car.

Using Excel, I get the following since taking ownership on November 20, 2007

total cost $993.53   total fuel 302.62   ave/$per gal $3.28   ave mpg 24.17

And my last 5 fill-ups go like this:
Date        Odo          Trip A       Fuel         Cost        MPG
5/29/08   6219   251.6   10.00   $39.00   25.160
6/6/08   6481   261.5   10.00   $40.00   26.150
6/12/08   6741   259.6   11.57   $46.50   22.437
6/23/08   7022   281.1   10.98   $45.00   25.601
7/2/08   7286   264.3   11.83   $48.00   22.342

Anybody else keep track in a spreadsheet?

I just put a little over 5k miles on mine and I have checked the mileage at each fill up.  I have averaged just over 30mpg each tank.  The highest I have had was a hair over 31.  Keep in mind that I have totally changed my driving habits with the price of gas.  I take off like a little old woman and cruise along at just around 3-5mph over the speed limit.

that is a nice chart there Invertalon!

i like the actual mpg compared to the displayed mpg - just confirms what i have always thought that the displayed mpg runs high.

mine displays ~1.7 mpg too much compared to actual mpg pretty consistently...

and where are you getting fuel these days for $3.84?

At a Shell here in Cleveland! I was surprised when I saw it expecting that it would be over $4, but to my surprise it was wrong!

Not only that, I get a 5% kickback with my Shell mastercard as well, so technically, I paid $3.65 a gallon. Not shabby! hehe

2008 xB with a 5-speed stick.
3200 miles on ODO.
I live in a small western Oregon town and don't commute or use the Interstate. My driving is a mix of town, country highways and driving through the (low) coastal mountains. I seldom exceed 65MPH, although I wind it up in the gears occasionally (emotional therapy kind of thing).
The car's MPG rating is consistently a mile or two higher than reality -- which at first varied between 24 and 28. The last couple of tanks have improved noticeably. Last time was 30 MPG.
The 08 is not a true economy car, but if I goose the throttle it goes like a scalded cat, and for me that's a fair tradeoff.
There are some negatives to the car, but fuel economy (to me) isn't one of them.
