The way I see it, there are only a couple useful functions of the trip computer:

1) Clock (obviously)
2) Outside Temp
3) Range (distance on remaining fuel)

I think the others are pretty much useless:

1) Instantaneous MPG: Fluctuates wildly with acceleration/deceleration.  Goes from 14 to 28 to 56 to 88 and all over the place within seconds depending on driving conditions.

2) AVG MPG: Assuming it uses the above instant MPG and averages those values, pretty much inaccurate.

3) E/T (Elapsed Time).  The manual says it resets when the ignition is turned off, but this isn't the case.  It "stops" when the car is turned off and picks up where it left off when the car is turned back on.

4) AVG SPEED:  Who cares?

Am I missing something?

re: AVG MPG

the calculator is consistent in its calculations although not completely accurate -  you need to find out what the difference is between your mileage calculator and actual mileage so you know how to interpret the readings...

my AVG MPG calculator is 1.7 mpg too high [i have check several times against calculating it manually]

so i just subtract 1.7 from calculator reading and i know what my accumulated MPG is...

i happen to like the AVG MPG reading as it helps me keep from lead-footin' it around town  Smiley 

i just wish the clock had a separate display..

Hey ryeguy, you can reset the AVG MPG, SPEED and MPH. Press and hold the button. Could be useful on a long trip, say.

I leave the temp up as I bought a small round digital clock and atached it to my dash just to the right of the left vent.
If I'm getting near empty, I like to leave the Range displaying.

Yeah, having them all in a single display is kinda pointless. especaily when you consider changing them while driving can be quite a distraction.

I actually like the elasped time clock. Was planning on never resetting it to see how much time I actually spent driving my car, but it resest when you disconnect the guage assembly or unplug the battery. So every time I do a mod it resets. However I am very curious to see if we can actually get to Las Vegas in 36 hrs.

This is true.. I'm on my 3rd go-round, up to 40:00 or thereabouts, so about 240 in all.

I guess the E/T would be useful if you wanted to know how much "drive time" it took you to get from point A to point B on a long trip say.  And the fact that it stops while the car is turned off (for stops for meals and the like) means you get a more accurate picture of how long you actually drove.

My wife would like this feature, because whenever we go on trips, she obsesses over how long it took us "to get there".  She is always taking total time, subtracting half an hour for a meal here, ten minutes for gas/potty stops there, etc.  Since the clock "pauses" when the car is off, takes the guesswork out of total drive time.

OK, I will put E/T back into the "useful" category.

i'd like to know why my average speed is always 24. I must have to much idle time cause i know i dont ever drive that slow

I don't really care about the instant MPG, But I do like all the other information that is there. I reset the Avg MPG and the Avg Speed at every fill up. I thought I read in the manual to reset those so they can always be accurate for the current tank of gas.

You need to hold the button when the average speed is displayed.  This will reset your average speed and start calculating it from the time you reset it.   It is useful when you're just getting on a highway and you wanna know what your average speed was when going from the beginning to the end.  I use this on the NJ Turnpike each time I go up to visit family.

Average MPG should be reset every fill up to determine what mpg's youre getting on that particular tank of gas, but average speed is useless unless you're on a long strech of road.  Any low speed driving will kill your average speed.  You could drive at 80+ miles per hour for two hours straight, and 30 minutes of city driving will bring it down to the 50's, which would no longer be accurate for either strech of road.

its way more than i really need in my opinion, the clock would have just been cool. Im still working on getting used to not having my gauges in front of me.

I've read a lot of complaints about the location of the instrument cluster, but as a tall person, I love it.  In other cars with traditional "in front of you" placement, visibility was always obstructed by the steering wheel.

I have no problems with the location of the cluster and i'm 5'7" ...i love the center location and the lcd display!

the  clock  display should be stand alone- it would be fine to roll thru the other stuff but give me the time all the time-
and maybe the temp display like it was in my 06 corolla

I use the E/T obsessively.  I have 2 routes to work.  One is a slightly longer distance, but seemed to take less time.  I started using the E/T to compare them.  I've been able to correlate the fastest route to the time I leave my house.
