I think I've read that people take the whole light assembly out and access the bulbs from behind, but I just took a knife and popped the covers off... they snap back into place when you're done.

You take a small screwdriver or a pick and u take the plastic cover off, behind each side is a wedge bulb. The best way to go is get like a 5 or 7 LED bulb off ebay or one of the auto illumination sites. Those bulbs typically run about $1.50 each. I have like 10 of them here, you just put them in and you put the cover back on. The same bulb can be used for your license plate bulb as well as the one in the hatch. The rear cabin uses a festoon type bulb which is also available in LED format.
