I got bored today and started taking apart my Scion. To your benefit I have written a tutorial on how to remove the front bumper of the 2008 xB, as well as the upper grille, lower grille, and side vents. This task can definitely be accomplished solo, although a second hand may be helpful. As with my other tutorials, I'm always looking for positive/negative feedback so if I make up names for parts, or if you can help me make this easier to understand, please comment!
Tools Needed:- Standard Flat Head Screwdriver
- 10mm Socket Wrench
Step 01: Remove Radiator Cover
Use a flat head screwdriver to remove the five pop-top fasteners indicated in the picture. The plastic radiator cover should then slip out easily.
Step 02 Part a: Remove Upper Grille
Remove the two indicated 10mm bolts and three additional pop-top fasteners that were previously hidden underneath the radiator cover.
Step 02 Part b: Remove Upper Grille (rear)
Several clips are located on the rear of the grille at the bottom, securing it to the bumper. Simply lift the clips and press, and the grille should pop out with ease.
Step 03: Remove Bolts from Top Side of Bumper
Another pop-top fastener and 10mm bolt are located on the top of the bumper adjacent to each headlight. Remove these.
Step 04: Remove bolts from Bottom of Bumper
Eight 10mm bolts are located underneath the front lip of the xB. The picture is with the bumper off to make the bolt locations easier to see. These bolts can be accessed with the bumper still on without the need of the vehicle being lifted off the ground.
Step 05: Unfasten Wheel Well
The bumper is secured to each wheel well by another 10mm bolt and a rotate & pop fastener. After removing each of these, it should be possible to pop the bumper out from the fender well slightly.
Step 06: Remove Bumper
The only thing securing the bumper now are three clips on each side between the bumper and the fender. It will take a slightly-more-than-comfortable amount of force to pop the bumper out of these clips. Note that it pops outward, it does not slide forward.
Step 07: Bumper Removed
This is what the 2008 Scion xB looks like with the front bumper removed.
Step 08: Remove Lower Grille
The lower grille pops out of the bumper in the same manner that the upper grille did in step 2b. Use of a flat head screwdriver will make popping these out easier than trying to do all sixteen by hand.
Step 09: Remove Side Vents
Each side vent is secured by six clips similar to those found on the stock upper and lower grilles.
Step 10: Finished!
Congratulations! The bumper is now finally naked and ready for a repair, a paint job, a new grille, and more!
