glad to read the last two replies, as I just got off the phone w/ dh and he said everyone is saying to go LCD.

The HHGregg salesman will sell us a $2399 52'' Samsung LCD for 1699.

Sounds like a deal!

Yeah good thing you got those posts. LCD is better than plasma. That sounds like a really good deal you are getting Samsung is a good TV.

Shancopp.  Is this 52 inch lcd a rear projection model?

lcd and rear projection are two different things, although both are types of HDTV's.  1699 for a 52 inch LCD is a GREAT price assuming:

1080P resolution (don't be fooled - 1080i is NOT the same thing)
10000:1 or better native contrast ratio
at least 2 (preferably 3 or more) HDMI inputs
Fiber Optic Audio output (pretty much standard nowadays)

Sorry I just shouted "no plasma no plasma" earlier, I was on my way out the door and wanted to get my 2ยข in.  I've got a 42" LG LCD HDTV which I spent $1800 for a year ago.  It's an amazing set, but I wish I had waited the extra year to get a bigger one of same quality for a lower price.

Ross makes a good point, make sure the TV is FULL HD which would be the 1080p. 1080i isn't full HD but it isn't far off. But if I am assuming right most likely that 52" Samsung you are talking about should be 1080p, but it doesn't hurt to make sure it is.

We got it.  Here is the stand and bracket (off to the right) we bought to go with..

http://www.hhgregg.com/ProductDetail.asp?SID=n&ProductID=17024&BrandStore=All

He sold us both of those for $335.

3yr warranty was 299 (debated on that one, but better safe than sorry I suppose)

Here is the TV we got for 1699

http://www.hhgregg.com/ProductDetail.asp?SID=n&ProductID=20730&BrandStore=All

went and got the dvr box today, gotta get it activated tomorrow.

Picture looks great.  It's very hard to tell in the store.  There are soooo many side by side, they start to blur together eventually!

Will try to post a pic tomorrow.

That looks like a whole lot of TV for 1699.   As for the warranty, chances are you won't have any problems...but if you did it would probably be in that third year and it would almost certainly cost more than $300 to fix.  The "light engine" (?) on our Sony is going out after 3 years....fortunately we found out it was some kind of design flaw in this model and Sony is covering the cost.   The repair guy said that otherwise it would have cost us about $1,300 to fix.   shocked

Enjoy your new toy.  You'll be ready for the Olympics in August. Cool

LOL, it is a lot of tv....too much IMO, but certainly not in hubbys!   Our room is approx 15 x 15 and this thing is a monster!

Glad Sony is paying for your repairs.  The salesman told us he only recommends the warranty on 2 items in HHGregg....tvs and refrigs.   For 3 yrs, they will fix it in my home or take it to the store, free of charge.  If a part has to be fixed/replaced 3 times, I get a new tv (lemon clause).

If we hadn't gotten it, which we almost didnt', we'd have to send the tv to Samsung or take it ourselves to a repair shop if there was one local.

I hated shelling out the 300, but feel better doing so.

thanks Ross!

Scion, nope, not rear projection...though those were affordable.    We are replacing a 51" Sony rear projection w/ this one though.  Now we get to haul the big Sony down to the family room!   oh no
