Missed a car payment? Good luck starting the car

Thu Apr 3, 2008 8:55PM EDT

I've never heard of this trend before, but according to USA Today, subprime borrowers buying a car are required to have a little box mounted under the car's dashboard that forces them to make payments on time. A light on the box flashes when payments are due, and if the payment is not made on time, the box starts to beep until a four-digit code is punched in to reset the system. The only way to get this code is by making the payment, and if that payment is not made on time, the car won't start.

Apparently, customers hate them, while lenders love the little boxes because it lowers default rates. Sekurus, the company who sells these boxes, has sold over 250,000 at $250, and its competitors are looking at ways to make these payment enforcement devices more efficient. One company is selling wireless systems that sends text messages to the car, and another one is adding GPS functionality to the device to make it easy for lenders to repossess the car.

I know times are tough for everyone, but is this really necessary? Before you know it, we'll have these little boxes locking us out the house too. It's just crazy.

While I understand the point behind these I think its wrong. Thats why you pay interest and have problems gettting credit when you screw up. This just seems like another way to give up control of your privacy and property. Plus I have never heard of anyone having trouble finding a car for repo. My roomate a few years ago moved in with me. Didn't update any of his info and they still found his car for repo. Although I must say the repo wasn't his fault. He bought his car from a buy here pay here place. They take a payment every two weeks. He was trying to trade in to buy a new car. He held off on one payment so he could have that money plus trade in amount. They told him they would work on it. Took them a week to figure it out. Then they said yes, Then a week longer, after he had the new car(well used new car). They told him the finacing didn't go through. So he returned the car late on friday night, and he woke up monday morning to his car gone. Didn't even have a chance to go make any of the late payments.

So ok yeah I rambled here, but I think they suck and are a bad idea.

I agree....what if you have an emergency and have to be a day or so late?  I just think it's kinda harsh.

I don't think you're going to see these at Scion/Toyota dealerships.  The way I heard its for those used car dealerships that sell mostly to people who've trashed their credit so bad they can't get financed any other way.    It's pretty depressing really.   Seems dangerous too.
