In the NY Times, there was a story about UPS and their new "package flow" software... apparently it helps plan routes that, among other things, attempts to eliminate the use of left hand turn lanes, thus reducing drivers' travel by 28.5 million miles, which, in turn, saved roughly 3 million gallons of gas! C02 emissions were also reduced by 31,000 metric tons!

Personally, I think the bulk of their savings is a result of their drivers parking down the street and drop kicking packages to my door... Tongue

you got that right about the drop kicking - my folks used to have a locked gate in their courtyard and the UPS guy would just toss their packages over the fence onto a brick walkway  confused

If only they were roundhouse kicks to the packages... That is nuts though really about the amount they save simply by avoiding left turns...

Is it the idling while waiting for the oncoming traffic to clear?

Wow, I just imagined driving home like that and it would easily double my commute or more!
