1  Technical & Styling / Wheels & Tires / 19" wheels and gas mileage on: April 26, 2008, 02:03:30 PM
Has anyone noticed a difference in MPG after swithing from stock to 19" wheels?

2  Technical & Styling / Audio / Electronics / Scion Navigation System Question on: April 26, 2008, 02:00:14 PM
Is the SNS disc or HD based?

I am asking since I really would like a HD based system.  I just picked up my first Scion a few days ago (2008 BCM Xb).  I had a Magellan 760 installed sitting on the dash in my Silverado, mounting it in the Xb would put it out of arms reach (at least in the center).  By biggest complaint with the Xb is the single 12V outlet, my Silverado had (3), I was able to plug in my GPS, Sirius Sportster 5 and my cell phone without having to worry.  Disc based GPS systems seem to take longer to reroute than HD based systems.  I guess I am going to have to pick up the Toy-SC1 and transfer my Sirius subscription over the one of these units to be able to use the factory head deck.  if I were able to replace my Magellan with the SNS, then I would only need the one 12V for my cell phone.

For those that do have the SNS, how quickly does it reroute.

I know it is a stretch, but could you check UPS, FedEx or DHL shipping to 40324, I wish I was in WA state as that ismuch cheaper than stock tire replacements, Just great to have sitting in the garage waiting on mine to need replaced.

Just bought myself a new 2008 BCM Xb, I am having the Katzskin leather installed next week, was dealer priced at $1450, bought at Grenn's Scion in Lexington, KY,  They said that I would have to bring it back next week and someone would trailer it to Louisville, KY for the leather installation.  I am trying to find out who the authorized installer is so that I can have the door panels done also at my cost.
5  General Scion xB / 2nd Gen Scion xB Talk / Re: driving in S-mode on: April 25, 2008, 01:49:15 PM
that is called engine braking

I've tried it a couple times and I don't get it.  If I wanted to shift I'd buy a manual.
The only practical use I can think of is to use it to force a downshift but if you just mash the skinny pedal it should downshift anyway.
It's a gimmick.

Absolutely, most definitely NOT a gimmick!

I live in the Cascade mountain range in Oregon.  4 days a week this Scion is driven off the mountain to the valley floor, and then back up again at night time.

If you ever drive this car on a winding and hilly road then you will immediately see the benefits of this "S" shifter.

And it's important to use it too. You don't want to be going up a steep hill with your RPMs under 2k. Drop the gear and drive up it in a range that your engine will appreciate.

And what about when you're going downhill on a winding road with some ice on it. Downshifting to get some reverse torque (or whatever you call it) on the wheels - instead of using your brakes the whole way down, will provide much more control and stability going downhill with snow or ice.
I've also taken it on some of the mountain fire roads around my house, and these dirt gravel roads that are steep as hell beg me to shift it down to 2 or even 1 sometimes.

Not in any way shape or form is this type of tranny a gimmick.
You just need to be in a situation where it benefits you.
6  Technical & Styling / Audio / Electronics / Re: adding a sub w/o rca preouts on: April 25, 2008, 12:54:46 PM
Basically you have two ways to do this, I did it on a 2000 S-10 a few years back, first option is buying a convertor so to say that changes the hi-volt output to RCA type signals, Crutchfield sells them for about 30 bucks, this is what I did and it worked wonderfully, I ran an Infinity Kappa 4-channel amp, front two channels on Kappa 4x6 plates and Kappa 6.5s, rear who channels bridged to (1) 10" Kappa Sub, great little system for an S-10 while retaining the stock head unit look.  This will require cutting either your front or rear speaker wires just a few inches from the harness connector that goes into the head unit.  The other option is having an amp that allows you to run hi-volt inputs, thus cutting your wires close to the speakers and running them directly into the amp, could be very difficult with the Xb as none of the speakers are very close together, I would go with the first option.
